During the ‘80s New York City was a melting pot of subcultures; Wall Street types climbed the corporate ladder while rappers, graffiti artists and DJs were the new kings of the street. It was during this time that bike messengers began servicing fast paced Manhattan businesses. It became evident that bike messengers needed a versatile and durable bag that allowed documents to be removed quickly and with ease. Manhattan Portage was conceived from this demand and the classic Messenger Bag was born.

Soon after releasing the category defining heavy duty Messenger Bag, Manhattan Portage introduced the classic square DJ Bag. This became an instant hit with New York DJs and musicians as it protected their valuable vinyl on the move.

Now, more than 25 years on, Manhattan Portage continues to produce highly functional, durable bags made from military grade Cordura® canvas, waxed canvas and heavy duty waterproof vinyl to ensure each product endures the wear and tear of city life.

Manhattan Portage is stocked throughout North America, Europe and Asia, and has collaborated with the likes of Beams Japan, X-Large, 55DSL and the recently released Stussy range. There are more exciting co-lab projects coming in 2011.

As the Australian bike culture continues to grow and diversify at a swift pace there is a renewed demand for bags that can withstand city life and protect expensive laptops, phones and iPads; tools of the trade for the new generation.
